Steina & Woody Vasulka

They met at the beginning of the sixties. In 1971, with Andres Mannik, they set up The Kitchen, a space for electronic media, video, cine-film, music, performances, which has made its mark on New York fringe culture.

As early as 1975, Steina Vsulka directed the body of her work towards Machine Vision, which refers to constant investigation into machine perception of space, perception exempt of human visual conditioning. As for Woody Vasulka, he pursues the work of analysis of the electronic image started at the beginning of 1970s.

In 1992 they received collectively the Maya Deren Award, a prize awarded by the American Film Institute to reward artists contributing to the development and to the renewal of the cinema and the video.
